“In the 20th century the glory of the human has become the desolation of the earth. And now the desolation of the earth is becoming the destiny of the human. From here on, the primary judgment of all human institutions, professions and programs and activities will be determined by the extent to which they inhibit, ignore or foster a mutually enhancing earth-human relationship."  Thomas Berry

Cruel Move: US Supreme Court Justice John Roberts Has Delayed the "Trial of the Century" Last Updated on 2018-10-24 14:49:20 “We are 6 business days from a trial we have been preparing for for 3 years. The lengths my own government is going to to get this case thrown out and avoid trial is absurd and offensive. This case is not about money...This is about my future and the future of our youngest generations. This is about fundamental constitutional rights of children.”Vic Barrett, 19-year-old plaintiff Juliana v US Youth Plaintiffs File Response with Supreme Court Pointing to the Government’s Serious Mischaracterization of Juliana v. Responding to Maas's "Vote No on 1631" Last Updated on 2018-10-22 22:15:01 Even as the number of endorsements grows for I-1631, including heavy weights Bill Gates and Michael Bloomberg, and cities across the state like Seattle, Tacoma, Mercer Island and little Langley on Whidbey Island, the anti-campaign heats up driven by millions of dollars from oil companies in Texas. Up to now, spending more than 21 million dollars.  One of the lead stories in this campaign concerns weather celebrity and University of Washington professor Cliff Maas, co-author of the "No on 1631" response in the voters pamphlet. Here we respond to Maas's assertions. “If you care about the environment, if you worry about global warming, and if this summer's smoke is of concern, you should vote against Washington State Initiative 1631.” Cliff Maas Blog 10/14/18 Cliff is a great meteorologist, but, has always had disturbing attitudes about climate change... Shocking Signs of Impending Peril Last Updated on 2018-10-20 03:08:35 Did we leave this on the back burner too long?  IPPCC says we have 12 years left to get to carbon neutral.  “It’s like a deafening, piercing smoke alarm going off in the kitchen. We have to put out the fire,” said Erik Solheim, executive director of the U.N. Environment Program  The bottom line, the report found, is that the world is woefully off target. “Net zero must be the new global mantra”- To avoid surpassing 1.5 C rise we must reduce GHG emissions precipitously by 2030. We have two choices: stop emissions entirely by 2050 or remove the amount of carbon dioxide from the air which humans put there since the industrial revolution. “What is needed is a WWII like mobilization.” Lester Brown Earth Policy Institute, 2007“ 1.5 degrees is the new 2 degrees,” said Jennifer Morgan, executive director of Greenpeace... Backbone Campaign Needs Help Last Updated on 2018-09-14 19:00:17   Backbone Campaign was honored to be part of "Free the Snake." Check out this special moment of solidarity taken from the Boat, with overhead banners made by Backbone volunteers to welcome the canoe families. The trip, however, had some hiccups and we need your help. On the way there, the boat trailer broke down and we had to buy a new one ($1400). And now the truck is stuck in Lewiston, Idaho, with a broken fuel injector and alternator ($1500). We need to keep these vehicles ready for solidarity actions - our truck Sera (short for Serendipity) made four trips out to Standing Rock to deliver supplies. It's also toured the country and is an asset we share with frontline activists in our movement. Our boat was instrumental to sHell No and Break Free. This important work continues, and Backbone wants to keep these assets in use for our movement.   This is... More »
