Contact Congressional Reps about 2018 Farm Bill

Soon the House and Senate will convene a conference committee to resolve the differences between their respective 2018 Farm Bills. Our work continues in earnest!

FAN recently signed onto a letter from national faith-based organizations which will be sent to the Farm Bill conference. This letter states our concerns with the House version of the bill as well as highlighting our three main priorities for the final bill:

1) Reject Harmful, Expanded Work Requirements

2) Oppose Barriers to Accessing SNAP

3) Maintain State Flexibility for "Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility"

Our faith traditions teach that we must care for each of our neighbors, ensuring that they have lives of opportunity and dignity.

Take Action!

There is still time to contact your member of Congress about this issue. Continue to voice your support for the bipartisan Senate Farm Bill (the Agriculture Improvement Act S.3042), because it preserves the SNAP program from any changes that would reduce benefits or enrollments. Especially if you live in Congressional Districts 4 or 8, please call or email the district offices in Yakima or Issaquah:

4 - Rep. Newhouse:; 509-452-3243

8 - Rep. Reichert:; 425-677-7414/509-885-6615

FAN is an active member of the Anti-Hunger & Nutrition Coalition (AHNC). Add your faith community to AHNC's letter to protect SNAP in the Farm Bill. Organizations and individuals are welcome to sign this letter.

August Recess

The House will be on recess from July 27 through September 3, and the Senate will only have a recess from August 6 through August 11. FAN urges you to gather advocates from your faith communities and schedule a visit with district staff to share how policies are impacting people in your communities, as well as concerns about the President's zero tolerance policy that has separated immigrant families.
